Founder Of The Somali Youth Union in the Netherlands (SYUN)
The Somali Youth Union in the Netherlands (SYUN) was born from a need for community, understanding, and mutual support.
Established in 2001, we emerged as a response to the challenges faced by Somali refugees arriving in the Netherlands, striving to find their place in a new society.
Our History:
Roots in Resilience: The early 2000s saw a significant influx of Somali refugees into the Netherlands. While safe, they faced immense hurdles: a new language, a different culture, and complex social and educational systems.
A group of visionary Somali pioneers in Alphen aan den Rijn recognized that the youth, the future of the community, needed a dedicated space for guidance and support. SYUN was founded as that space a self-organized, grassroots foundation built on the principles of self-reliance and communal upliftment.
Our Guiding Stars:
Mission: To actively promote the empowerment, participation, and integration of Somali youth in the Netherlands. We provide the tools for social, educational, and economic strength, helping them to build independent, fulfilling lives and become active, positive contributors to a multicultural Dutch society.
Vision: A future where Somali youth in the Netherlands are confident leaders, proud of their heritage and fully engaged in all aspects of society. We strive for a community that is not just integrated, but is a thriving and essential part of the Netherlands’ social fabric.
Our Values:
Empowerment: We equip youth with skills and confidence, not just temporary aid.
Community: We believe in the power of collective action and shared identity.
Integrity: We operate with honesty, transparency, and respect in all our actions.
Inclusivity: Our doors are open to everyone who supports our mission.
Courage: We tackle difficult issues like FGM and discrimination head-on.
SYUN is powered by a team of dedicated professionals, cultural experts, and passionate volunteers from within the community.
Our shared experiences and deep understanding of both Somali and Dutch cultures allow us to provide relevant, empathetic, and effective support.
